Each year, every sophomore arranges to go to a work site and job shadow for the day. This is an opportunity for students to explore a career of their choice, where they can observe the duties required by personnel in the field and have opportunities to understand what the job is like in daily practice. They will also be better able to determine how a person might best prepare to secure such a job. Students and parents are responsible for arranging transportation. As finding a meaningful job shadow placement often requires a fair amount of time, students are encouraged to begin looking early.
Each year since 2006, MCHS sophomores go on a college tour. This is part of the MELMAC grant, and it’s a very big event for our students. Sophomores completed a career exploration tool in English classes as part of their “I Search” paper prior to the trip. Each student will now have the opportunity to visit a public 4-year university, a private 4-year college, and a community college. We have three “comfy” buses covering three different groups of schools. This trip is a major part of our goal to raise student aspirations and introduce them to the possibilities of the college experience. Even if students are looking at going to college out of state, these visits will give them a broad exposure to different types of schools. This is the second year of the tour, and our reviews for the first year were outstanding! Our buses leave at 8 am and return at 5 pm. We have a tour and a brief presentation scheduled on each campus and lunch at one of the colleges. Permission slips need to be in prior to the trip.
