Manchester Students follow progress through Appalachian Trail!

In computer class we have been using technology to follow Mrs. Poulin’s nephew Danny Moody (from Winthrop), Dan Giguere (from Manchester), and Danny’s dog Daisy on their trek along the Appalachian Trail.

This past winter Maine Public Broadcasting along with Landrover and Garmin were in search of some hikers that were going to be hiking the Appalachian Trail.  Danny and Dan applied and after an extensive application and interview process they were chosen.  You may have seen the piece on WCSH6’s show “207” where they interviewed the two this winter. The link to the interview is here:  http://www.wcsh6.com/news/local/207/follow-along-as-two-mainers-attempt-the-appalachian-trail/426267420

Danny and Dan began their adventure on April 15th and we have been following them along the way thru the use of an interactive map, http://mainepublic.org/post/here-there-and-back#stream/0

Here we can click on the hiker on the map and see their progress, read their field reports, and check out some awesome pictures. Through the use of cutting edge technology we are able to share the experience of a lifetime with these two local men.  It is truly amazing!

Here is a picture of the fourth and fifth graders at Manchester Elementary checking in to see the progress…
