ABOUT LITERACY INTERVENTIONS
TITLE I LITERACY
Title I is a federally-funded program designed to support students in need of educational help in literacy or mathematics. It emphasizes:
• measuring student progress
• supplementing the regular classroom program
• involving parents in all aspects of the program
• promoting Family Literacy Nights or Parent Information Meetings
Student Identification: Literacy assessments are given by classroom teachers in conjunction with reading support personnel in the fall to determine eligibility for reading support services. Students who do not meet grade-level benchmarks at any point during the year may be considered for support. Support services will begin as soon as assessments have been completed and parents have been notified.
Instruction: Explicit skill-based instruction will be provided to students based on need. Instructional components may include
• letter identification
• letter/sound correspondence activities
• interactive writing
• guided reading
• word work (learning how words work)
• story retelling
• comprehension strategy development
• informational and creative writing
Student Grouping:Groupings of students will be determined by student need. Groupings may include:
• small groups of 2-5 students
• sometimes staff assist students in the classroom
Progress Monitoring: Students will be assessed throughout the year in order to inform instruction and document growth. Trimester reports will be sent home from the Reading Room in addition to the classroom report.
What happens if a student is not progressing in school?
It often requires a coordinated effort by the student, family, and teachers to help a student who is not succeeding in school. Each school has a Response to Intervention Team that meets regularly and works together to identify students who may need extra supports in the areas of literacy, math, or behavior. RTI helps coordinate resources for families, students, advisors, and teachers.
How does RTI work?
Teachers monitor students’ progress very carefully throughout the year. If a student is struggling with a particular standard or skill, the first step is to provide additional instruction within the classroom. If the student still does not show growth then the teacher may refer the student to the schools RTI (Response to Intervention) Team. Other teachers and Interventionists on that team will work with the teacher to come up with other strategies to try. Meanwhile parents and supportive family members play a crucial role throughout this process of figuring out what approach will be most effective in “jumpstarting” the student’s learning.
