Dear RSU 38 Staff, Families, and Community Members,
I am writing to share an important update regarding the RSU 38 Superintendent Search.
After completing a thorough screening and interview process, the RSU 38 School Board is pleased to announce that Dr. Karen Smith was formally hired this evening, December 15, as the permanent Superintendent of Schools, effective immediately. The Board’s decision was made by a unanimous vote.
The district received ten completed applications for the position. A Hiring Committee made up of 15 individuals, including staff members, community members, and School Board members, carefully reviewed and screened all applications. Following this process, three candidates were selected for interviews, which were held on December 11. After thoughtful deliberation, the Hiring Committee recommended Dr. Smith to advance to the School Board for final consideration.
Dr. Smith has served RSU 38 with distinction as Curriculum Director, Assistant Superintendent and Interim Superintendent. Her deep understanding of the district, strong leadership experience, and steady commitment to students, staff, and families make her exceptionally well suited to lead RSU 38. The Board is confident that her knowledge, background, and dedication will continue to strengthen our schools and communities.
We would like to thank the members of the Hiring Committee for their time, care, and commitment throughout this process, as well as our staff, families, and community members for their continued engagement and support.
Please join us in congratulating and warmly welcoming Dr. Karen Smith as the permanent Superintendent of RSU 38.
